More women are discussing uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) with their physicians as a treatment option, according to survey results from the National Women's Health Resource Center (NWHRC).
Among the 233 U.S. adult women surveyed, more than 40% said that they had talked about UFE with their doctors, while 35% reported that they chose UFE over hysterectomy, myomectomy, or hormone therapy.
The women, ages 25-55, were surveyed between September and October 2006. To participate, they had to have suffered from symptomatic uterine fibroids in the past seven years for which they saw a medical professional.
The NWHRC is a nonprofit women's health resource center based in Red Hill, NJ. The study was funded by BioSphere Medical of Rockland, MA, a developer of microspheres used in UFE treatment.
