Volcano gets FDA OK, buys catheter

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) developer Volcano of San Diego has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the Eagle Eye Platinum digital IVUS catheter.

Commercial release of Eagle Eye Platinum is expected in the second quarter of 2010.

In other news, Volcano has also acquired the Xtract thrombus aspiration catheter device line from Lumen Biomedical of Maple Grove, MN. The Xtract aspiration catheter features a large single-lumen design, circular right-angle tip, and curved directional distal segment for clot removal to help re-establish blood flow.

Volcano became the exclusive global distributor of the Xtract catheter in May 2009.

Finally, the company announced that it lost a jury verdict in a lawsuit filed by LightLab Imaging over tunable laser technology that Volcano acquired when it bought Axsun Technologies. Axsun had a contract to supply tunable lasers to LightLab, and a jury found that the contract specifications for the lasers is a trade secret of LightLab, that Axsun agreed not to sell any tunable lasers for use in cardiology imaging to any third party during the exclusivity period in the contract, and that Axsun breached its contract with LightLab.

The jury was not charged with determining damages, which would require a second jury trial. Volcano said it intends to appeal the verdict.
