Gamma Medica debuts LumaGuide biopsy device at RSNA

Gamma Medica has added the LumaGuide breast biopsy package to its LumaGem molecular breast imaging (MBI) system, and is showing it as a work-in-progress at the 2012 RSNA meeting in Chicago.

The LumaGuide hardware and software package includes a third CZT-based camera to provide precise targeting capabilities for the biopsy of suspicious lesions and surgical interventions.

Biopsy with the MBI-guided accessory is quick -- about half the time of an MRI-guided biopsy -- and streamlined, according to the company. Depth calculation is automatically done by software, without the need for manual calculation, and the system features straight hub-to hub insertion of the biopsy tool. The use of technetium-99m sestamibi as a tracer allows for the biopsy of multiple or bilateral lesions with minimal patient preparation. After biopsy, samples can be scanned, providing immediate confirmation that the target lesion was accurately sampled.
