A total of 37,000 PET procedures were performed between September 1 and December 31, 2000, according to a study released by market research and consulting firm IMV Medical Information Division. IMV estimates that 450 facilities in the U.S. performed PET procedures during the fourth quarter.
While the majority of PET sites used coincidence cameras to perform the studies, the majority of procedures were actually done on dedicated PET scanners, according to IMV. The Des Plaines, IL-based firm said that nearly 90% of the procedures were oncology studies. Approximately 10% of sites obtained their radiopharmaceuticals from an on-site cyclotron, while all other facilities used an outside supplier, IMV said.
In its PET Procedures Market Summary Report, IMV conducted a survey of a panel of facilities performing PET procedures using PET scanners (either fixed or mobile), or nuclear medicine cameras with coincidence detection capability. These facilities will continue to report their procedures to IMV on a quarterly basis through the third quarter of this year.
