Printing firm Codonics used its Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) booth to highlight Virtua Medical Disc Publisher, a new product that demonstrates the firm's expansion into the market for recorders designed to burn CDs and DVDs for referring physicians.
Virtua is designed to make burning CDs and DVDs as simple as possible for imaging facilities, according to the company. The device sits on a PACS network and burns disks sent to it in DICOM 3.0 format from the PACS. Virtua eliminates the need to tie up a PACS network during disk burning, the company said.
Virtua will support burning images to CD when the product launches later this summer, with support for DVDs coming later. Virtua disks include a built-in image viewer, either Codonics' own application or the eFilm Lite program, and also prints labels with an imaging facility's branding. The system will carry a list price of $17,995.

Also new is support for long films on the company's Horizon printer. A new XL version of the printer now supports 14 x 36-inch and 14 x 51-inch output, printing on one continuous sheet of film. Horizon XL was first shown at the 2005 RSNA show and will begin shipping in the summer.
Codonics also discussed its move to create a direct sales channel for its EP-1000 color paper printer. The company is setting up direct sales to complement its OEM partnerships.
