A survey from the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) shows that entering-class enrollments in radiography, radiation therapy, and nuclear medicine programs in 2007 remained steady.
The numbers come from program directors at approximately two-thirds of the educational programs recognized by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
An estimated 16,612 first-year students were enrolled in radiography programs in 2007, an increase of 1.2% from 2006. There were 1,577 enrolled in radiation therapy programs, a gain of 3.3%, while 1,781 enrolled in nuclear medicine technology programs, representing a decline of 1.3%.
Richard Harris, Ph.D., ASRT's director of research, noted that if the trend continues the number of radiographers will fall short of U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' projections for demand. However, the number of radiation therapists will exceed the bureau's estimated need by 55%, and the number nuclear medicine technologists will be more than sufficient.
