Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL) has until June 30, 2014, to detail its future plans for the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
According to a report in the North Renfrew Times, the commission set that deadline for AECL to develop and submit a long-term plan for the Chalk River, Ontario, reactor, which supplies approximately half of the molybdenum-99 (Mo-99) radioisotope for North America.
The commission stipulated that the plan include either how and when the 54-year-old reactor will be shut down, or how AECL will keep NRU operating beyond the end of its license in 2016, the article noted.
