Edmonton group protests isotope facility

Residents in Edmonton are taking the University of Alberta to court to block at least temporarily the progress of a new medical isotope production facility.

According to a CBC report, the residents assert that school officials failed to properly consult with them in planning for the facility. They have filed an application with the Edmonton Court of Queen's Bench to stop development until the university tells the neighborhood about its land use and development plan.

A spokesperson for the group said it does not oppose the facility, but it wants the school to provide more information to the community.

The report quoted Carl Amrhein, University of Alberta's provost, as saying officials are surprised and disappointed about the court action, because they feel the amount of consultation was sufficient as they have been working with community representatives for some time.

The university hopes to complete the facility by 2016, when Atomic Energy of Canada's (AECL) National Research Universal reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, is scheduled to close.
