The case of suspended University of Iowa (UI) radiology professor Dr. Malik Juweid flared back up again during a June 15 hearing to consider whether Juweid should be disciplined for allegations that he threatened coworkers and violated patient privacy laws.
In testimony at the judicial panel hearing, Juweid attributed his behavior to cultural differences and mental stress from working at the school, according to an article in the Associated Press. He attended last week's hearing via Skype from his native Jordan, according to the article.
The Associated Press also reported that at one point during testimony, Juweid called Dr. Lois Geist, associate dean for faculty affairs in the UI's Carver College of Medicine, a "big liar." Investigating officer Randall Ney then admonished him, according to the article.
The three-person judicial panel will make recommendations to Sally Mason, university president, on whether Juweid should be disciplined for his alleged behaviors, according to the Associated Press.
In January, the university placed Juweid on unpaid administrative leave. At the time, he confirmed with AuntMinnie.com that his pay was suspended on December 28, 2011. His annual salary had been $241,000, plus benefits worth $45,000.
The action was taken the day after approximately 20 employees told the university's Threat-Assessment Team that they were bothered or threatened by Juweid's behaviors, which included allegations of inappropriate emails and statements that wished death upon certain people, according to the Associated Press.
Juweid submitted a complaint to the school's Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity, and he is suing the university and several officials for discrimination and retaliation by supervisors and colleagues. The university has denied the allegations.
