A falling gamma camera killed a patient during a procedure at a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital in New York City.
The patient was killed on June 5 during an imaging study at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx. The patient's name is being withheld in accordance with privacy regulations, a VA spokesperson said.
An official stated that an Infinia Hawkeye 4 gamma camera from GE Healthcare was involved, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. The system collapsed and fell on the patient, crushing him, according to the story.
A spokesperson for GE said the company has been notified of the incident and is investigating it.
"GE Healthcare was made aware of a patient incident at the VA Medical Center in the Bronx, NY," said Benjamin Fox, public relations manager for the U.S. and Canada. "The GE Healthcare team has responded and is supporting the ongoing investigation."
