Juweid reaches deal with Iowa medical board

Former University of Iowa nuclear medicine physician Dr. Malik Juweid has reached an agreement with the state medical board regarding charges that he engaged in disruptive behavior.

Juweid has been involved in a long-running personnel dispute with the University of Iowa that eventually led to his firing in 2012. Juweid claimed that he was the victim of harassment and racial bias at the hands of radiology department chair Dr. Laurie Fajardo, who eventually stepped down from the position.

The most recent development in the case involves Juweid's dispute with the Iowa Board of Medicine, which was investigating a complaint that he engaged in disruptive behavior at the university. In 2011, the board ordered him to submit to a physical and mental health evaluation, but he failed to do so in the specified time period, leading the board to file disciplinary charges.

In a settlement reached on March 6, Juweid agreed to not practice medicine under his Iowa medical license until he completes a personal evaluation. Juweid's medical license became inactive due to nonrenewal in September 2013; he signed the settlement agreement from his native country of Jordan.
