The American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) has published an updated consensus statement on the use of stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in women. The statement includes recommendations for selecting the appropriate women for testing.
The consensus statement was published June 5 in the Journal of Nuclear Cardiology and is intended to guide the appropriate use of nuclear cardiology in evaluating women with stable ischemic heart disease.
Incorporating sex-specific and evidence-based guidance for diagnostic testing to determine risk status and management of symptomatic women with suspected ischemia is an important step, wrote the authors, led by Dr. Viviany Taqueti, from Brigham and Women's Hospital.
The consensus statement includes the following criteria:
- Use cardiovascular imaging as a gatekeeper to quality testing and treatment of at-risk women.
- Select appropriate women for testing.
- Implement radiation dose reduction strategies in women.
- Leverage technology to probe relevant female biology.
- Invest in research and clinical trials of cardiovascular imaging in women.
