Siemens Healthineers has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Biograph Vision PET/CT system.
The hybrid scanner features the company's new Optiso ultradynamic range (UDR) detector technology, which is based on silicon photomultipliers rather than conventional photomultiplier tubes. It also offers enhanced spatial resolution through the detector's smaller lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) crystal elements, which have been reduced from 4 x 4 mm to 3.2 x 3.2 mm.
Biograph Vision also has a large 78-cm bore designed for better positioning of radiotherapy devices or bariatric patients, Siemens said. The system can fit into the same size room that currently holds a PET/CT scanner from Siemens' Biograph mCT product line.
Biograph Vision first debuted at the 2017 edition of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) meeting.
