GE HealthCare and St. Joseph's Health Care London in Ontario, Canada, plan to collaborate on a new theranostics center.
Theranostics refers to the dual approach of using radiopharmaceuticals to both identify and treat cancer and is an emerging field in nuclear medicine. The new center at St. Joseph's will be operated through the hospital's Lawson Health Research Institute and will support research activities, clinical collaboration, and educational programs for the evolving practice.
Specifically, efforts at the center will focus on the following:
- Expanding production and access to radioisotopes
- Advancing technology to improve image quality, dose calculation, care coordination, and operations for the clinical practice of theranostics
- Educating and training global healthcare practitioners and government bodies to support the adoption and advancement of theranostics
Plans for the center were guided by recommendations from the Society for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) on how to establish a Theransotics Center of Excellence, GE noted.
