The University of Missouri broke ground October 2 on a $20 million, 47,000-sq-ft addition to its MU Research Reactor (MURR) facility.
Dubbed “MURR West,” the addition will expand the facility’s research and medical isotope production space primarily for research and to enable more collaborations with industry partners, UM officials said, in a release.
Each year, 1.6 million patients benefit from medical isotopes produced at MURR, the most powerful university research reactor in the U.S., operating at 10 megawatts, 24 hours a day, 6.5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, UM said.
The university also has plans to build a new, state-of-the-art reactor.
“This expansion will ensure we continue the great work we’re doing here as we also prepare for our next big initiative, NextGen MURR,” said Matt Sanford, executive director of MURR.
