Originally published in 1993, the first edition of this textbook immediately became one of the most popular sources of musculoskeletal imaging information. The second edition has 1,500 new images, and the text has been expanded to 1,362 pages.

New chapters, such as MRI: Bioeffects and Safety, Principles of Echoplanar Imaging, and MR Imaging of Muscle Injuries, account for the 250 extra pages of text.

This second edition also incorporates new arthroscopic, gross surgical, and histologic photographs, along with arthroscopic/MRI correlative images, and new photographs from cadaver dissections. New discussions on MR arthrography and various MR techniques also appear in this edition, and are very useful in terms of pragmatic clinical imaging.

Each chapter is outlined in the beginning for a quick survey of contents. The authors provide a short overview for each featured body part, followed by imaging techniques and protocols for the examination of that area. The gross anatomy is then presented with cadaveric images, graphic illustrations, and cut anatomical sections. MR anatomy of each joint is presented, followed by the demonstration of various types of pathology.

The collaborative effort between the various specialties, including radiology, orthopedic surgery, and pathology, offers effective multidisciplinary information. Quality clinical information and patient management techniques are provided for various syndromes and patient presentations. New information on the hip, knee, shoulder, foot, wrist, and spine are also featured.

In terms of images, high-quality gross anatomical and MR anatomical illustrations are included in each chapter, and the use of color in the histopathologic slides and the 3-D illustrations is effective. Each chapter is extensively referenced with ample additional references.

The chapter on bone tumors is replete with interesting cases, and is remarkably well done. It contains numerous gross surgical specimens, histopathologic illustrations, and intraoperative photographs that offer excellent radiologic/pathologic correlation.

As with the first edition, there are chapters on bone marrow imaging. Although this topic is typically not found in books dealing with orthopedic pathology, it will undoubtedly be helpful for those frequently encountered marrow abnormalities.

Chapters on kinematic MRI and MRI of muscle injuries are welcome components of this text and have practical musculoskeletal imaging information.

Despite the multidisciplinary focus of the text, there is still a paucity of histopathological and surgical images. Some of the images are black and white photographs, and replacing these with color images would demonstrate the surgical/histopathological appearances more effectively. Although the majority of the images are of excellent visual quality, a few are of insufficient quality to adequately demonstrate the pertinent pathology.

It is interesting that a chapter on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) would be included in a textbook on orthopedics and sports imaging. This chapter concentrates heavily on disorders of the TMJ meniscus, and there is a lack of correlative images, such as surgical specimens, gross anatomic illustrations, and histopathologic slides. The text is well written, but the subject matter and the dearth of images make this the least useful chapter in the book.

The orthopedic focus is also somewhat blurred in the chapter on spine imaging, where some of the topics covered (i.e. spinal tumors, multiple sclerosis, dysraphism) are more typical of neurological or general MRI texts. This portion of the book appears more to be a modified version of a neuroradiological text than it does a chapter designed for this book.

Despite these shortcomings, Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine is a highly informative book that addresses many of the reference needs and imaging concerns of the healthcare professional involved in orthopedics.
