Site-design challenges for 3-tesla MRI

Dear AuntMinnie Member,

Thinking of upgrading your 1.5-tesla MRI magnet to one of those powerful new 3-tesla models? Thinking of doing it without looking at the configuration of your MRI suite? Think again.

In the latest of a series of articles we've been running on MRI site design, Tobias Gilk from architectural firm Jünk Architects discusses some of the special requirements of siting a 3-tesla MRI system. We're featuring the story this week in our MRI Digital Community.

MRI vendors have done their best to make 3-tesla scanners easy to site. From the outside the systems often look no different from their less-powerful brethren, and they have a similar footprint -- meaning they can fit in the same physical space as a 1.5-tesla system.

But don't let that fool you. Installing a 3-tesla magnet involves a whole host of design considerations, such as how to contain the extended fringe field of the units. The more powerful fringe field could interfere with other imaging equipment like PET and CT scanners -- and that's no fun for anyone.
