Mayo Clinic radiologist and researcher Richard Ehman, MD, has been named by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in Washington, DC.
The IOM is a national resource for independent, scientifically informed analysis and recommendations on health issues, and members volunteer on IOM committees, boards, and other activities. Selection to the institute is one of the highest honors in medicine in the U.S.
Ehman, a professor of radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and a member of Mayo's Center for Advanced Imaging Research, is best known for his groundbreaking work in medical imaging, specifically on nuclear magnetic resonance and its use in diagnosing a variety of conditions.
His research program has focused on developing methods to reduce or eliminate flow and tissue motion artifacts in MRI, approaches for vascular imaging, and development of MRI-based techniques for characterizing the mechanical properties of tissue. He also is credited with developing MR elastography, which allows physicians to determine the stiffness of internal organs without invasive procedures.
