MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) developer InSightec is reporting that Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami has performed its first focused ultrasound procedure with the company's Exablate Neuro system.
The procedure was performed on a 21-year-old patient having seizures due to a benign hypothalamic hamartoma brain tumor. Tumors of this kind are believed to occur in one out of 200,000 children and teenagers worldwide.
Nicklaus Children's Hospital is using Exablate Neuro as part of a feasibility study designed to gather preliminary information for the safety profile of the device using incisionless ablative treatment for benign centrally located intracranial tumors in pediatric and young adults.
