Dr. Garry Gold has been appointed as the permanent chair of the department of radiology at Stanford University. Gold had been serving as interim chair since 2020, following the passing of Dr. Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, PhD, in July of that year.
Gold is an internationally recognized expert in osteoarthritis and the development of translational MRI. He received a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering at Stanford in 1988, and he then went on to complete a medical degree from the university in 1992.
After completing his residency at Stanford and a fellowship at the University of California, San Diego, Gold joined Stanford as an assistant professor in 2000 and was promoted to full professor in 2012. In 2017, he was named vice chair for research and organization at the department.
Gold's background in both electrical engineering and radiology has led to the publication of over 200 peer-reviewed articles as well as eight patent applications, Stanford said.
