The 12th patient exposed to radiation overdose during treatment for pelvic cancer in Panama has died, Panamanian daily La Prensa reported yesterday. Camila Pinto passed at dawn on July 21. Doctors have not yet determined whether the excessive radiation, given to Pinto and to 27 other patients at the National Oncologic Institute in Panama City, contributed to her death.
The second stage of the government's investigation should be completed by the end of July, health ministry officials told La Prensa. The ministry will then produce a final report assessing medical and technical responsibility for the accident. The penalties will depend on the degree of responsibility, and will range from censure to dismissal, La Prensa said.
