Radiation therapy developer TomoTherapy of Madison, WI, has installed its Hi-Art system at Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City, OK, and the City of Hope Cancer Center in Duarte, CA.
The TomoTherapy Hi-Art System provides 3D imaging immediately prior to each treatment to verify the location of a patient's tumor. Radiation is delivered via a beam in a helical pattern, from any point in a 360-degree radius around the patient.
This enables more accurate and more precise treatment of the tumor, and reduces exposure of healthy tissue to radiation, according to TomoTherapy. In addition, the use of the technology reduces treatment time for patients, the company said.
In related news, the firm said its install at the City of Hope Cancer Center was used last month to perform whole marrow irradiation for patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation. The product was used to selectively deliver radiation therapy to the entire marrow compartment, sparing radiation to organs such as the lung, heart, brain, GI tract, oral mucosa, hypopharynx, and larynx, TomoTherapy said.
