BSD gets favorable patent notice

Brachytherapy and hyperthermia therapy developer BSD Medical of Salt Lake City has received an official notice of allowance for a new patent expected to be issued by the U.S. Patent Office.

The patent is for a new disposable device that would enable the use of simultaneous brachytherapy and microwave hyperthermia therapy, employing the firm's existing systems. Current technology allows only sequential treatments, according to BSD.

The firm said that when hyperthermia therapy was administered simultaneously with radiation, the effective dose of radiation was amplified 2.5 times without increasing toxicity in research conducted with a breast cancer model.

The company said it has the rights of all of the Food and Drug Administration approvals that have thus far been issued for combining interstitial microwave hyperthermia therapy with brachytherapy in treatment.
