Strong international sales for radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems helped overcome a drop in North American revenue in the company's fiscal 2010 second quarter.
For the period (end-March 31), the Palo Alto, CA-based vendor had revenues of $586 million, up 6% (up 3% on a constant currency basis) from the $553.6 million recorded a year ago. The company had net income of $91.1 million, compared with net income of $67.8 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Varian also cited higher revenues in its oncology and x-ray products businesses, cost controls, improved company operating margins, and a lower tax rate for its improved quarterly net earnings.
