RaySearch hit with patent claim

Radiation therapy firm RaySearch Laboratories said it has been sued for patent infringement by radiation treatment planning software developer Prowess.

In its suit, Prowess claims that RaySearch is infringing upon a U.S. patent that was issued in 2007 concerning direct optimization of machine parameters in radiation treatment planning, according to RaySearch. Prowess holds an exclusive license to the patent, which is owned by the University of Maryland.

RaySearch said that it has told Prowess that there is no infringement, and in addition, the patent could be invalidated because there is prior art in older publications describing the same concept. The company said it believes it has a strong case and a good chance of winning the dispute.
