Medical isotope developer IsoRay Medical said that the first lung cancer surgery to implant its cesium-131 brachytherapy seeds embedded in mesh using da Vinci robotics was successful.
The surgical procedure was performed by radiation oncologist Dr. Deepak Khuntia at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA, on a patient with early-stage lung cancer using the da Vinci surgical system from Intuitive Surgical, IsoRay said.
A piece of mesh embedded with cesium-131 brachytherapy seeds was sown directly onto the surface of a 70-year-old male's lung following wedge resection of the tumor, according to the firm.
