Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has delivered a 90-ton cyclotron to the Scripps Proton Therapy Center in San Diego.
Construction on Scripps' 102,000-sq-ft center began in October 2010, and the facility is expected to be open for patient care by spring 2013. The center will have the capacity to treat approximately 2,400 patients annually.
The cyclotron will be lifted in two separate sections with a specially designed crane. During the course of two straight workdays, the cyclotron will be aligned into place, followed by the installation of a beam transport system in patient treatment rooms.
