Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for its Smart Segmentation knowledge-based contouring radiotherapy software.
Designed to work in tandem with the company's Eclipse treatment planning software, the Smart Segmentation software combines two techniques in an effort to reduce advanced treatment planning time, according to the vendor.
Smart Segmentation analyzes anatomic images and identifies and outlines organs and other structures, while Varian's knowledge-based contouring technique enables clinicians to start the planning process by drawing upon a library of precontoured images with important anatomic structures already outlined, the company said.
