An increase in international orders helped offset lower sales in North America and grow overall revenues for radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems in the company's first quarter of fiscal year 2012 (end-December 30).
Total revenues in the first quarter increased 8% to $625.3 million, compared with $579.9 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Net earnings decreased 6% to $90.2 million in the quarter, compared with $96.5 million in the same quarter of last fiscal year.
First-quarter revenues in Varian's Oncology Systems division rose 8% to $487.6 million, up from $452.4 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. Revenues for the company's X-Ray Products unit advanced to $113 million in the quarter, compared with $111.6 million in the same quarter a year ago.
First-quarter net orders rose 6% to $485 million, with a 22% increase in international markets, which offset an 11% decline in North America, compared with the first quarter of fiscal year 2011.
