Elekta gets FDA nod for Agility

Radiation oncology firm Elekta has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Agility, a beam-shaping device integrated into the head of a linear accelerator.

Agility's features include 160 tungsten leaves, 5-mm thick, with a leaf speed of up to 6.5 cm per second. It also includes Integrity R3.0 software, Elekta's digital control system to coordinate leaf movements with variable dose delivery rates and other treatment parameters.

Agility is designed to allow clinicians to sculpt radiation doses to the contours of tumors with enhanced precision, reducing dose to healthy tissue or organs. It can be purchased as part of a new radiotherapy system from Elekta, or as an upgrade option to a large part of Elekta's installed base of linear accelerators.
