Radiation therapy firm RaySearch Laboratories has signed an exclusive license agreement with University Health Network's Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto regarding techniques for automated planning of breast cancer treatments.
The licensing agreement gives RaySearch the right to integrate algorithms from software developed by the cancer center into the company's RayStation treatment planning system.
The software emulates treatment planning steps including organ segmentation, beam optimization, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) optimization, and dose calculation. Dosimetrists can produce complete clinical treatment plans and automated quality assurance reporting in several minutes instead of what could be several hours for each plan, according to the company.
The Canadian cancer center has been using its technology clinically for several years. It validated the automated techniques in peer-reviewed studies that demonstrated significant time savings and equivalent or better plan quality compared to standard manual planning.
The University Health Network's Technology Development and Commercialization office negotiated the licensing agreement with RaySearch.
