Varian reports Q2 revenue gains

Demand for its x-ray and proton therapy products contributed to revenue growth for radiation oncology firm Varian Medical Systems in its 2014 fiscal second quarter.

For the quarter (end-April 1), the vendor had company-wide revenues of $779 million, up 1% from last year's $768 million. Varian had net earnings of $93 million, compared with $113 million a year ago.

For the six-month period, Varian's revenues were $1.5 billion, compared with $1.4 billion in 2013. Net earnings were $191 million, compared with $208 million for the same period a year ago.

Revenues in the company's Oncology Systems unit in the second quarter were $603 million, up 4% from $582 million in 2013. For its Imaging Components business -- which includes x-ray products -- Varian posted revenues in the second quarter of $169 million, up 2% compared with $166 million for the same period last year.

In other news, Varian has entered into an exclusive supplier agreement with UnityPoint Health, a hospital system that provides care throughout Iowa, western Illinois, and southern Wisconsin.

Under the terms of the agreement, UnityPoint Health will acquire four to five Varian TrueBeam systems over the next three to five years. The deal also includes a customized service agreement with Varian and a seven-year enterprise software agreement to support the use of Varian's Aria data management and Eclipse treatment planning software, according to the firm.

The total value of the multiyear agreement is estimated at $20 million to $25 million, the company said.
