RaySearch gets 510(k) clearance for pencil-beam option

Radiation therapy firm RaySearch has received 510(k) clearance for a pencil-beam scanning option for its RayStation 4.0 treatment planning system for proton therapy.

The new version includes tools for optimizing proton treatments and was released in international markets in December 2013. The version can now be sold in the U.S. thanks to the clearance, the company said.

RaySearch believes that pencil-beam scanning is the most sophisticated form of proton therapy delivery, enabling intensity-modulated proton therapy that allows clinicians to target tumors by controlling both the intensity and spatial distribution with millimeter-level precision.

The new version includes all the tools needed for pencil-beam scanning, including multiple field optimization, single-field uniform dose, and distal edge-tracking techniques.
