Varian launches business unit in Algeria

Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems has formed Varian Medical Systems Algeria, a new strategic operating unit intended to support the firm's expansion in North Africa.

Varian Medical Systems Algeria was formed via a joint venture with local healthcare company Cialfarm, and it will include new offices, a training and education center, a parts depot, and a service center, according to the vendor. The company's existing customers in Algeria will receive enhanced service support and technical training through the new organization, Varian said.

Varian said it installed its first linear accelerator in Algeria more than 20 years ago and now has 16 systems operating in the country. In 2014, Varian inked a $51 million deal with the Algerian Ministry of Health to furnish six additional cancer treatment centers with radiotherapy and radiosurgery technology, including its TrueBeam treatment devices.
