Proton therapy treatment center installer Proton International announced it is working to secure final approvals for the construction of a proton therapy center on the University of Alabama at Birmingham's campus.
The center will be the first in the state, according to the firm. It has been approved by the Alabama State Health Planning and Development Agency, and construction is expected to begin this year. Proton International will build and own the center, with University of Alabama physicians providing clinical services.
The center is expected to open in 2019, and it will feature Varian Medical Systems' TrueBeam linear accelerators as well as its Eclipse treatment-planning software and Aria information management system, the company said.
