Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems is continuing its buying spree with the acquisitions of interventional radiology companies.
Varian purchased Endocare Systems, based in Austin, TX, which provides technology for cryoablation and microwave ablation. Its lead product is the Cryocare CS system, a fully integrated planning, placement, and treatment system designed to enhance cryotherapy.
Varian also bought Alicon, based in Hangzhou, China, which develops embolic therapy agents to treat liver cancer. Its Caligel technology is comprised of calibrated resorbable gelform particles commonly used as an embolic agent for liver cancer therapy.
The acquisitions are designed to help Varian's expansion into interventional oncology, said Kolleen Kennedy, president of Varian Proton Solutions and chief growth officer.
The latest purchases follow Varian's May acquisitions of Cancer Treatment Services International for $283 million and privately held cardiac radioablation firm CyberHeart.
