Radiation therapy firm Varian Medical Systems has signed an agreement with University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center to develop software designed to streamline the review of radiation oncology treatment plans.

Varian and MD Anderson plan to develop software that will connect radiation therapy sites to a central database that allows MD Anderson doctors to host review sessions of treatment plans and suggest changes in plans to physicians. The platform could be deployed at all MD Anderson locations and throughout the MD Anderson Cancer Network, which connects community hospitals and healthcare systems around the world.

  • Reducing the volume of radiation dose that's distributed to nearby healthy organs, resulting in fewer side effects for patients
  • Automating the process in which treatment plans are compared to criteria developed by MD Anderson and national guidelines
  • Reducing the amount of time required for reviewing radiation treatment plans
