Hahn was confirmed for the post by a 72-18 vote on December 12, according to an article published online by the Hill. He was nominated to replace the previous permanent FDA commissioner, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who announced his resignation in March 2019.

Hahn has been the chief medical executive of MD Anderson Cancer Center and served on the board of directors of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) from 2014 to 2018. Hahn also previously obtained the rank of commander in the U.S. Public Health Service.

In a press release, ASTRO applauded the Senate for confirming Hahn, noting that he is triple board-certified in medicine, medical oncology, and radiation oncology, and he also has broad administrative experience.
