Radiation therapy vendor Varian Medical Systems has added new artificial intelligence (AI) functionality with the introduction of version 16 of its Eclipse treatment planning software.
Eclipse v16 features RapidPlan PT, a machine learning-based proton treatment planning application. RapidPlan, previously available only for photon-based radiotherapy treatment planning, can now also be utilized for proton treatment planning. It uses machine-learning models to provide dose predictions, helping to determine which patients would be appropriate for proton or photon therapy, according to the vendor.
The new Eclipse release also includes RT Peer Review, a collaborative workspace aimed at streamlining and speeding up the peer review process for radiotherapy treatment plans. Eclipse v16 has received the European CE Mark, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 510(k) clearance for the product is currently pending, Varian said.
