Dear AuntMinnie Member,
The radiation oncology community converged on Washington, DC, this week for the 66th annual meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). AuntMinnie.com editors have been providing virtual coverage of ASTRO 2024, including this edition’s feature story on how a shorter course of postmastectomy radiation combined with breast reconstruction is safe and effective.
Researchers also found that timing matters when adding immunotherapy to chemoradiation in lung cancer treatment. And lutetium-77 dotatate can lengthen progression-free survival in patients with meningioma.
In other ASTRO news, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and proton therapy were deemed to be equally effective for prostate cancer patients. Another group concluded that spiritual beliefs and a distrust of clinical research may partly explain why Black patients choose not to participate in clinical trials.
There was also some good news for patients with brain metastases who experience cognitive side effects after radiation therapy. These patients often eventually recover, especially those who had received targeted radiation techniques, according to a presentation at the meeting.
Be sure to check back in regularly on our Radiation Oncology/Therapy content area to keep up with the latest news and developments in this exciting field.
