Misonix gets clearance for 3-D ultrasound unit

Medical ultrasound developer Misonix and refurbished ultrasound provider Sonora Medical Systems have received 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for their BabyFace unit, a 3-D surface-rendering accessory for diagnostic ultrasound systems.

BabyFace was co-developed by Sonora and Silicon Graphics spin-off Biomedicom of Israel. It can make any ultrasound device into a 3-D imaging system capable of viewing a fetus in 3-D, according to Farmingdale, NY-based Misonix. The system includes a computer interface and a probe-tracking instrument that produces the 3-D image. Misonix owns 51% of Sonora, of Longmont, CO.
