GE introduces low-cost ultrasound scanner

GE Medical Systems has introduced a new low-cost ultrasound scanner weighing in at just 22 lbs. The Logiq 100 system includes a high-resolution monitor, generous memory, and a wide selection of probes for use in abdominal, ob/gyn and urological exams. Also included are a high-frequency linear probe for small-parts imaging, and a micro-convex probe with an adjustable handle for transvaginal and transrectal imaging, according to GE.

The self-contained unit can be easily moved throughout a hospital or clinic, or transported by a physician who must cover several facilities, according to Omar Ishrak, GE's general manager of global ultrasound. It is also valuable to rural physicians, and can eliminate the need for patients to travel several hours for an ultrasound exam, he said. Logiq 100 can be purchased through GE's Web site and costs less than $10,000, according to GE.
