Ultrasound ergonomics firm looks at workplace risks

Five years of surveys conducted worldwide have shown that work-related injuries are a serious problem among sonographers. A Kenmore, WA-based consultancy, Sound Ergonomics, has been formed to assist radiology administrators in addressing ultrasound ergonomic issues.

The group is made up of Joan Baker, past president of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography; Carolyn Coffin, ultrasound department program director of the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver; and Susan Murphey, faculty member and injury prevention specialist in diagnostic ultrasound at Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, WA.

Sound Ergonomics provides ergonomic site evaluations for clinical settings, equipment design consulting, in-service education, and local educational seminars. In addition, the company’s Web site, http://www.soundergonomics.com, offers adaptive equipment for reducing strain on muscle groups used by sonographers.
