The International Space Station’s Destiny research laboratory has been outfitted with ATL Ultrasound's HDI 5000 ultrasound scanner, according to company officials. NASA informed the Bothell, WA-based manufacturer that the product was part of the March 8, 2001 payload of the space shuttle Discovery.
The HDI 5000 scanner will be used to conduct long-term imaging studies, as well as to evaluate the medical condition of the space station's crew. The images will be transmitted to Earth for evaluation of the effects of microgravity on musculoskeletal and cardiovascular functions.
