Portable-ultrasound developer Longport is making its commercial launch, taking delivery of its first 10 production scanners last month from its manufacturing partner in the U.K. The Swarthmore, PA-based company markets a high-resolution, portable digital ultrasound scanner, the Longport Digital Scanner (LDS), that captures and reproduces images of soft tissue down to approximately 3 cm.
Five of the units were sold wholesale the company's distribution partners, two are with private practice groups, one will be placed at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, another at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, and the remaining unit will be used for demonstrations, according to the company.
In other company news, Longport has appointed Dr. Nandkumar Rawool as director of ultrasonic imaging. Rawool is currently a research associate in the division of ultrasound, department of radiology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He will be joining the company as a consultant.
