Philips adds XRES ultrasound enhancement

Philips Medical Systems has released XRES, a diagnostic ultrasound image processing technique that enhances subtle diagnostic information by helping the human eye to better perceive patterns, according to the Bothell, WA-based vendor.

Performing 350 million calculations per frame in real-time, XRES analyzes and adapts the content within the image in a process similar to that of the human brain, Philips said. Boundaries and margins are significantly enhanced and subtle tissue patterns are revealed, while artifacts such as speckle and clutter are virtually eliminated, according to the vendor.

Available on the firm's super-premium HDI 5000 SonoCT scanner, XRES is offered as an option on a wide range of HDI broadband scanheads, covering abdominal, ob/gyn, breast, small parts, vascular, and musculoskeletal applications. ATL HDI 3000, 3500, and 5000 ultrasound systems can also be upgraded to XRES technology with SonoCT imaging as part of Philips’ Performance 2002 Upgrade, according to the company.
