This book is great for novice sonologists, radiologists starting breast ultrasound, residents, and fellows. The first six chapters deal with the basic principles and techniques of breast ultrasound. The next seven sections address specific breast pathologies. The next four chapters cover Doppler, 3-D sonography, ultrasound-guided interventional procedures, and implants. The last chapter discusses the documentation of breast ultrasound.
Breast Ultrasound is very compact and addresses the most pertinent points of this modality. The short chapters make for easy reading and quick references. High quality illustrations emphasize the important points.
However, as this book is a translation of the 1996 German edition, some of the image annotations reflect the European original. In addition, some of the information is outdated: the 3-D sonography images were obtained with less sophisticated equipment; the chapter on ultrasound-guided interventional procedures summarizes biopsy methods, but does not include details on such techniques as fine-needle aspiration, cyst aspiration, or pre-surgical localization.
Breast Ultrasound is not a comprehensive reference textbook, but it is excellent source for self-assessment on the subject. For more complicated cases, other references may be better suited, such as The Practice of Breast Ultrasound by Dr. Helmut Madjar.
