Misonix, University of Pittsburgh to test 'bone cutter'

Ultrasound developer Misonix has entered into an agreement with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) to evaluate its Ultrasonic Osteotome device on animal laminectomies.

Also known as the "bone cutter," the device creates straight or curved cuts on any bony plane, with bone cuts as small as 0.5 mm, and no injury to adjacent tissues, according to the Farmingdale, NY vendor.

Principal investigator Dr. William Welch is chief of neurological surgery at UPMC's Presbyterian University Hospital, and division chief of neurological surgery spine services at the university's school of medicine.

The portable device has applications in neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, maxillofacial surgery, and plastic and reconstructive surgery. Its commercial release is scheduled for later this year, Misonix said.
