Siemens Medical Solutions reported that it has signed an agreement to acquire San Leandro, CA-based ultrasound transducer developer Sensant.
The acquisition will allow Siemens to develop advanced capacitive microfabricated ultrasound transducer (CMUT) technology, and commercialize transducers based on the technology, according to the Malvern, PA-based vendor.
CMUT transducers are made from silicon wafers using integrated circuit fabrication processes, and miniature "drum heads" are formed from microfabricated silicon. A single drum operates as both an ultrasonic speaker and microphone, the company said.
Siemens believes that CMUT technology will provide improved volumetric four-dimensional imaging for a wide range of applications, as well as a broader frequency range and higher image resolution.
