GE adds volumetric mode to ultrasound

Multimodality vendor GE Healthcare of Chalfont St. Giles, U.K., has added a new volumetric imaging technology to its Logiq line of ultrasound scanners. The technology was introduced at this week's American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) show.

Volume Imaging Protocol (VIP) enables sonographers to sweep the transducer across patient anatomy and collect raw ultrasound data. Once the acquisition is completed, radiologists can view the data in real time or "virtually re-scan" the patient by manipulating the raw data with new protocols or in a 3D planar view after the patient has left, according to the company.

VIP provides more diagnostic flexibility and enables radiologists to follow a workflow pattern closer to that used in CT or MRI studies, GE said. The technology should enable faster patient exams and report turnaround times while making exams more consistent. VIP will be available across the Logiq ultrasound line, including the Logiq 9, Logiq 7, and Logiqbook XP scanners.

In other GE news, the company announced that it has shipped its 17,000th AMX mobile x-ray system. The milestone unit was shipped to Ohio State University Medical Center in Columbus.

The company also reported that it will introduce a digital version of the AMX platform in the late summer. The system will use the flat-panel digital detector technology employed on other systems in GE's x-ray line.
